Hugo Ball (1886 – 1927)
Hugo Ball was a German author, poet and one of the leading Dada artists. He was a pioneer in the development of sound poetry. Ball was born in Pirmasens and grew up in a middle-class catholic family. In 1914 a patriotic Ball tried to join the army as a volunteer but was denied to enlist because of medical issues. He tried to enlist three times. His enthusiasm waned after witnessing the reality of the war when he visited the front in Belgium. In 1915 Ball moved to Zürich where he published the sarcastic poem Totentanz 1916 in the left-radical magazine Der Revoluzzer.
Totentanz 1916 is featured on my album Krieg.
